July 2, 1991 Dear Grandmama, We are camping tonight in Yellowstone National Park at Grant Village. We are on Yellowstone Lake. The ride today was about 55 miles from a town called West Yellowstone, Mont., right outside of the park. We saw a few buffaloes and moose but no bears. We stopped at Mountain Paint Pot which are bubbling hot springs that smells like sulphur. We ate at the lodge at Old Faithful for lunch. The hardest part was the climbs. We went over the Continental Divide twice. We climbed at least 2000 feet, dropped down, climbed again, etc. One time when we needed a break, we were attacked by a swarm of mosquitoes so bad we had to keep moving. But at the end of the day, we were in good shape, got a nice campsite, hot showers, and a big meal. So far we’ve met a couple from Holland who are hiking, exchange students from Argentina, and a family from Mt. Vernon, KY. All very friendly. Love, Paula & Duc |
