July 3, 1991 Dear Grandmama, Today was a day of extremes. It began with temperatures in the upper 30s. We were so cold that we got into the same sleeping bag the last few hours. I was frozen trying to pack up. We stopped at the lodge at Grant Village and ate a good hot breakfast. Best hot chocolate I’ve ever had. Once my toes had warmed up, we headed south out of Yellowstone and into the Tetons. They are truly beautiful. You can see them for miles and miles. We met a friendly group of cyclists on a tour and a couple doing the BikeCentennial trail to Kansas City. We ended up the day with about 60 miles. We headed east to a KOA campground that was a big disappointment. $16 to set up your tent in the middle of a hot, dry field. The cottonwood is blowing these feathery things about like snow. We had to ride 2½ miles to get dinner. But they had homemade chicken noodle soup. Love, Paula |
