July 4, 1991 Dear Grandmama, What a day! Again it started out in the high 30s but didn’t seem quite as cold as yesterday morning. However, there was frost on the picnic table so it was pretty chilly! Today was short — 50 miles into Dubois (dew-boys). But the first 18 miles was up! We climbed about 2000 feet to the highest point and the last pass we have to cross. It was called Togwotee Pass. It was so difficult to constantly push. We had to stop to rest a couple of times — it took us three hours to climb the 18 miles. But the downhill! We hit 54 mph once. It’s great to coast for 10 miles. Dubois is a nice little town. We stopped at their museum. This area is known for making railroad ties and sending them down the Wind River. We made it to town in time for their Fourth of July parade which was pretty funny. Great campsite — shady with grass. At dusk they’ll have fireworks. Love, Paula |
