July 6, 1991 Dear Grandmama, It’s been a rough day. 80 miles to nowhere. We started early to beat the heat as much as possible so we were on the road by 6:30. There were a few towns on the map between Riverton and Hell’s Half-Acre where we are staying tonight. The first town at 20 miles [Shoshoni] was a true town — grocery and all. The second town was one house with an old woman who let us get water from a pump in her backyard. The third town was just a store. They were about 20 miles apart and in between was nothing! No houses, no trees, no people. Just a few cows, horses, and deer. I was wiped out and discouraged by the third town. But after a good rest and some juice we made it to Hell’s Half-Acre. It’s a desolate place and the wind is whipping but there’s a geological formation that looks like the Painted Desert in Arizona. It’s pretty neat. Now for a good night sleep. Love, Paula |
