July 7, 1991 Dear Grandmama, It never stops blowing here. There is usually a strong wind all afternoon. Last night at Hell’s Half Acre the wind blew hard all night and was still blowing when we got up. I was pretty worried because we had to do 90 miles today and it was a strong, cold headwind. But as it turned out, even with the headwind all day and a final total of 101 miles into Douglas, we both felt real good! I think the key is that it was overcast and cool most of the day so we didn’t have the sun beating down on us and the towns we passed through were spaced apart just right and we got good food. We are camping at a KOA and it’s real nice — lean-to for shade and good showers. We are both trying to keep the sunburns to a minimum but it’s hard. Our noses are peeling and lips are chapped. But I’m truly having a good time. It’s a challenge at time but Duc and I are working well together and are holding each other up. Love, Paula |
