July 7, 1998 Hi Brenda & Bill, Its been a very difficult day and yet some wonderful highlights. The bad part: it was a 79-mile day from Charlottesville to Lexington. 35 miles was on the Blue Ridge Parkway. It went up, up, up with not a lot of down. We averaged about 5-7 mph on the uphill. Almost ran out of water. Then coming off [the parkway], we had a steep 4-mile downhill. So steep, we had to spray the last of our water on the brakes because they were burning up. Duc is the best captain! On the way in on the last 10 miles, I got terrible stomach cramps. But we made it! The good part gorgeous scenery, a stop at a peach orchard with a friendly owner and great peach frozen yogurt. And the amazing Cookie Lady. She lives halfway up the steep 4-mile climb to the parkway [in Afton, Va.]. For 22 years, she has welcomed cyclists on the route with cookies and a place to stay. Her house is full of photos, notes, etc. Love, Paula. |
