July 8, 1991 Dear Grandmama, Today was supposed to be an easy day — 50 miles from Douglas to Lusk. Yesterday we had to ride 20 miles on the interstate and knew we had to do 10 more miles today on it. It’s interesting but not easy. Traffic rushing by at 65-70 mph. Anyhow, we had a strong headwind against us all day and it ended up being 60 miles. There were times we worked our butts off just to go 10 mph. From now on, when anyone says “Wyoming,” I’ll think “WIND!” I was feeling pretty miserable. We got into Lusk finally and are staying at a great campground called BJ’s. It’s run by a nice old man named Bob and his wife. He’s tickled with our tandem and is always joking around. Plus it’s a very clean and neat place. After a good shower and big dinner, we are feeling better, though tired. Tomorrow we’ll have 80 miles and just found out that 8 miles in under construction. Not good! Love, Paula |
