July 9, 1991 Dear Grandmama, Today we had to go 80 miles from Lusk to Newcastle. My legs and butt are really sore but we were going to stay at a bed & breakfast place for two nights so that was pretty motivating. We knew there was major construction on the road so we made a sign last night that said “Need Ride Through Construction, Please.” Figured some pickup would take us through. As it turned out, the highway construction crew gave us a ride. That was the only way — they wouldn’t allow cyclists to even walk through. Too dangerous. So he let us off about 3 miles down the road. Other than our second flat tire and a little sprinkling, the ride was uneventful though we are both tired. We get to the B&B and it ends up they have never had guests before. Our room didn’t even have furniture — just a bed. The bathroom had no door. We almost went to a motel but the lady is really nice and came down a lot in price. Plus we’ll get a good breakfast. They scurried around to set up our room and the bathroom. We rented a car to go to Mt. Rushmore tomorrow. It’ll be good to have a day off from riding. Love, Paula
