July 11, 2000 Hi Brenda & Bill, 92 miles, Sisters to Mitchell, Ore. Another long day but the ending made it wonderful. We had a great hotel in Sisters — the Comfort Inn with all the conveniences, even a kitchenette. Got up early and had a pretty flat ride with good meals in Redmond and Prineville. Had a long climb through Ochoco Pass but was real steady up for 16 miles. Right before the pass, we met our first westbound Trans-Am rider — Brad from California. Stopped and talked for a while. After the pass, had a FAST downhill for 7 miles. Hit 43 mph but was pretty wide open. We dropped down into the desert — much hotter on this side of the pass. Difficult gradual climb into Mitchell for about 5 miles. Thought the town would never appear! But it's a wonderful town. Really just 1 or 2 streets, a dozen buildings. Staying at the Oregon Hotel — right out of the Old West. Looks like a large house or B&B. There are several westbound cyclists here. Duc made the rounds talking to them. We sat out on the front porch until 10 talking to John Anderson from Washington. He is taking pictures of ghost towns. Mitchell is on the web as a ghost town. Love, Paula. |
