July 11, 1998 Hi Brenda & Bill, 78 miles from Damascus to Breaks Interstate Park. Today was one of the most difficult days weve ever had riding. Climbed big mountains all days including three big climbs in the last 10 miles to get to the park. Had steep, scary downhills. Duc is sore from braking and I was shaking we hit 41 mph in 25-mph zones around switchbacks. We were beat when we got in. Were staying at the lodge on top of the mountain. A real treat. Bluegrass music in the amphitheater. Not great, but OK. The valleys have become like hollows, very narrow, steep and hilly. Traffic picked up a lot, some coal trucks. For the first time, someone yelled at us to get off the road. Must be getting close to Kentucky. Love, Paula.
