July 13, 2000 Hi Brenda & Bill, 89.5 miles, John Day to Baker City, Ore., 100+ degrees Another long day but some good high spots — literally and figuratively. Had breakfast in a quaint town called Prairie City. We had 3 good climbs today — none huge but they took their toll. We were depending on a store [in Austin Jct.] after the first climb for food and water but it was closed. If the Williamses hadn't carried extra water, we would have been in trouble. But they did have water so we finished the climbs. Then discouragingly, we had to add 6 miles onto the route to get to Sumpter for lunch. But it was a great lunch and ice cream! While there, a large group came in. They were part of a "ghost town class." Then we had a 30-mile ride into Baker City — mostly down or flat and along a lake and the beautiful Powder River. It was hot but not overbearing. Once at our hotel, did laundry and ate Chinese food. Met Richard, who also is going east. Started at Eugene and going to Yellowstone like us. Went to grocery to stock up on food. Not sure we'll have many stores tomorrow. Called the boys twice but Brenda must have them on the boat. Love, Paula. |
