July 13, 1998 Hi Brenda & Bill, 64 miles from Hindman to Booneville. Booneville is a tiny town with one tiny motel. Clean, but that’s all. Run by an elderly couple. They let us do our laundry there because there’s no laundromat here. The day was a little easier riding. Had some big climbs but not quite as long as the past few days. The valleys are becoming real valleys, not just hollows. Saw more eastbound cyclists. Most are retired. In fact, one retired couple is staying at this motel. They are from Arizona. Lots of coal trucks. Big and moving fast. Scary. But our saving grace was that we were on a larger four-lane highway (KY 80) when we encountered them. Last night an amazing coincidence — we went to a little mini-mart in Hindman for ice cream and I ran into a friend, Chris Bischoff, from Louisville. He used to be the librarian at St. Francis and was visiting a friend at the Hindman Settlement School. We call the boys each night. We’ll see them in two days. I miss them. Love, Paula. |
