July 15, 1991 Dear Grandmama, Another day of wind! If I lived here I would go insane with this wind always blowing. Actually we are in much better shape today than yesterday. A good nights sleep in a bed helps. We rode 95 miles to Gothenburg in 95°. The towns were better spaced today. We made good time to North Platte where we stopped for an Italian buffet for lunch. Then the wind and heat slowed us down. The road follows the Platte River and the railroad and is flat. Not a lot of traffic since it parallels I-80. We stopped in Paxton to see this cafe that was full of stuffed wildlife — elephants, polar bears, etc. Late in the afternoon (we crossed into Central Time Zone today) we stopped in Maxwell for iced tea at a little bar/cafe. We drank glass after glass. The lady behind the bar talked to us about our trip and then refused to accept money for the tea. We broke a spoke yesterday and had another flat this evening so Ducs been doing bike maintenance. Love, Paula |
