July 16, 2000 Hi Brenda & Bill, 70 miles, Cambridge to Pinehurst, Ida. An interesting day. Overcast so cool but headwind, some traffic. Staying in tiny cabins RIGHT by Little Salmon River in tiny Pinehurst — not even on a regular map. Cafe closes at 4:30 so had to get food for later. Sitting on a swing overlooking the river. Had lunch in New Meadow at the Sagebrush BBQ. Great. Showed us their smoker, etc. The owner also makes beautiful furniture. Met 3 college kids westbound, from Connecticut and Virginia. Just one gradual climb today. Several fires north and west of here so saw several fire crews heading out. Last night in Cambridge, we ate at the Pioneer Restaurant. Chef was Brett. Was pretty gourmet. He is only open on Fri. and Sat. and ranches the rest of the week. Has been all around the world. Makes a great rasberry daiquiri. Had a scare at breakfast. We ate at Bucky's where we stayed the night. Duc and Don were standing by the bikes when a van pulled into the gas station across the road. Two guys getting out start yelling at them about being "f------ faggots." Duc and Don just came inside but we watched them. One of the guys looks around, steals fishing rods out of the boat parked next to their van. Don runs over and tells the owner and they chase the van down as it is pulling away. They give the rods back and drive off. Police said they'd already dealt with them during the night for drunkeness. It really scared Duc and me because the guys could easily find us out on the road and ... no telling. But they didn't show up. A Continuation of July 16 Wanted to add on concerning last evening. We had to buy food early since the store closed early. We had a nice picnic by the river about 6:00 or so and were waiting to see deer come out. The owner of the cabins came down to talk a minute. We had been told at our lunchstop, the Sagebrush, that she could belt out R&B songs that could make your spine tingle and that her husband played drums. We mentioned this when we checked in. Anyway, in the course of the conversation, we find out she was born and raised in Louisville — Valley Station. She misses White Castles. He had been stationed at Ft. Knox when he met her. They traveled for years with bands and then bought Pinehurst Resort. He still plays some on weekends. We went with them in their van back to the Sagebrush for their dinner/our dessert and some live music (not very good). Had a fine evening with Susan and Tim. Slept well with sound of the river right outside our window. Love, Paula. |
