July 16, 1991 Dear Grandmama, It was warm last night so it was a little hard to sleep — real different from the cold nights in the mountains. Today was a short day — 63 miles from Gothenburg to Kearney. Plus well be staying with Kevin Fallers sister Karen tonight so we should get a good nights sleep again. Since the day was shorter, we took time over breakfast and lunch and read the newspaper. It was hot, though. We got into Kearney about 2:00 and a little later the thermometer read 101°. At least the wind wasnt whipping at us as bad today. We had to wait until 6:00 before Karen got off work so we went to the bike shop and did a little maintenance. Our back tire wore out today. Good timing since not many towns we came through have bike shops. Interesting event on the road today. Just west of Overton, a dog started to chasing us. Actually he was racing us. He ran with us for about 2 miles. Real friendly. We kept it about 15 mph and he stayed with us until we stopped at a creek. We snuck away when he was swimming. Love, Paula |
