July 17, 2000 Hi Brenda & Bill, 63 miles, Pinehurst to Grangeville, Ida. Duc is eating his way across Oregon and Idaho. It was apricot trees growing wild alongside the roads. Now it is cherries and plums. Just everywhere. Blackberries, too. We are about halfway through Idaho. No shade, in 80-90 degrees. We followed the Salmon River a good way today. This is rafting country. We met a group cycling west with Adventure Cycling. Ate lunch with some of them. They pay about $2500 and that includes a leader/guide, camping fees, supper and breakfast which they all help cook. They are taking 3 months to cross. This morning, we were halfway in days and mileage. We are in Nez Perce territory. We climbed out of White Bird to the summit along an historical battlefield. It was a 12-mile climb, LOTS of switchbacks, but we made it. Didn't stop to learn the history though. We got into Grangeville, restocked on tubes and tires at the bike store. Good motel and good Mexican food. Love, Paula. |
