July 17, 1991 Dear Grandmama, We rode 65 miles from Kearney to Aurora, a small town that lets you camp free in the town park. Showers at the swimming pool. A nice facility. It’s hot again — mid-90s but for once we didn’t have to fight the wind. Last night we stayed up late (10:00) visiting with Karen and drinking margaritas. She was really friendly. We had planned on spending time at a pioneer museum in Grand Island this morning but had two flats and had to spend time looking for a bike shop to replace some inner tubes. Found a nice shop run by a guy named John Wayne! We’ve met a couple of interesting cyclists. Two days ago we stopped on the road to talk to a guy going west to the Tetons. Started in Virginia. Never ridden the bike any distance before he started. This morning at breakfast there was a guy who was riding west and earning his way by washing windows. He carried a big bucket, wipers and extension pole on his bike. He was kind of cynical and full of himself, but interesting nonetheless. Just 3 days til RAGBRAI. Love, Paula
